The Dude removed his blog from Google’s Blogger platform back in 2018, at the time, Google+ was being shut down (as they had previously killed Reader, a really slick RSS tool), and there was widespread speculation that Blogger was next on the chopping block. Simply put, it didn’t feel like the content creators had enough control over the platform that they were using to get their content out into the world. Now, to be fair, this site has always been just a tiny thing for personal use and entertaining (some) friends, very much on the “non-serious” side of Ye Olde Informatik Oxtrail, vs. a serious side-hustle or something similar, so taking it down (especially since the blogging trend seems to have gone the way of the Dodo) didn’t seem like that big of a deal. Google made it pretty easy: a couple button pushes, and an archive was made for posterity while the old site proper vanished into the ether. Looking at technology, it also looked like it shouldn’t be too hard to leverage modern cloud-based infrastructure in order to learn about some stuff that The Dude doesn’t get to play with very much professionally. Static website creation, cloud storage and load balancing, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines, the Go language… you know, nerd stuff… and so Kallisti was born. So now The Dude can enter some text in an editor, commit it to a git code repository, and then a code pipeline will then grab it, run tests, convert it to a web page, and publish it where y’all can view it, all automagically. Fun, right? Now that it’s stable (but certainly not perfect– it’s really interesting how quickly external links “rot”), it’s time to start using it as a platform to shake a virtual fist at the universe, as well as share long form information with those who care (or don’t as the case may be). The old blog was converted pretty much “as is”, along with all the old comments. I’m sure there are errors, bad links, etc., in the “historical” area, and maybe it will get cleaned up further than it is if the urge arises. Looking ahead, some new trivia challenges for Quatloos, venting at the current world at large, and learning even more new tech is on the horizon. Hopefully you all will have some fun along the way.
