Oh my. So the election, which was predicted to be a toss-up, went to the 45th President of the United States. It also appears that the Senate and the House will be controlled by the President’s party, as well as the Supreme Court. Not entirely unexpected, but now what?
There were proposals to deport millions of people who are directly responsible for doing jobs Americans refuse to do because they don’t pay nearly what they are worth, and you can’t live on that wage. Not to mention that these jobs are generally back-breaking and miserable. So let’s game this out, shall we?
Agriculture is going to take a hit like no one is going to believe—all the farmers who think this was a winning move are going to get a big wake-up call. Assuming they only attempt to remove undocumented agricultural workers, that is estimated to be 20% of that workforce. Food will rot in the fields. Wait! Americans will do the jobs! The wages will just have to go up! Sure. Then prices will follow as food becomes more expensive to produce. Inflation is a bitch. Neat, huh?
A similar percentage of construction workers are undocumented. So construction is going to take a hit—who exactly is going to build the desperately needed housing? Same result as agriculture. Rent will continue to rise as affordable alternatives aren’t built, and you still won’t be able to buy a house.
