Looks like some Highwaymen got to T-Mobile. Assuming that the information is legit (and The Dude doesn’t have insider information one way or the other) it appears that at least 500 internal servers were compromised, and have been for some time, giving the miscreants access to internal databases, financial documents, etc. They claim to have offered the data to T-Mobile’s competitors, who refused to pay for the information, so are now offering the information to the highest bidder. The disclosure method (a publicly accessible security mailing list) is inconsistent with their stated goals, because as of now, the cat is out of the bag, and given the profile of the case, all sorts of heavy hitters are going to come out to play (read U.S. Federal resources). Because of the counterintuitive nature of their stated purpose, The Dude strongly suspects that they’ve shorted DT (probably naked shorted, as it’s harder to track, and since they’ve broken multiple laws already, why not some more), and are then hoping that the disclosure alone will be sufficient for them to get some bank as DT stock falls. The offers that they are going to get at the mail address listed in the disclosure have a high probability of being intelligence/law enforcement offers, with the goal of “following the money”, and if they have any sense at all, they are going to dig themselves a very deep hole, pull it closed after themselves, and hope they don’t live somewhere with rendition. Here’s to hoping they don’t have any sense (unlikely). From the T-Mobile point of view, their internal InfoSec folks, IT folks, and Business/PR types must be having a *really* bad weekend, and you should expect some heads to roll in the next few weeks.
